Laboratory activities produce hazardous and toxic waste. Preliminary test results obtained by the concentration of Fe exceeded the quality standard of waste water by the Central Java Provincial Regulation No. 10 / 2004, so that needs to be processed. One of the methods to overcome the heavy metal pollution is cation exchange (ion exchange). Material or media is a synthetic zeolite from coal bottom ash. In this study, synthetic zeolites of bottom ash coal activated by thermal method with a temperature of 300oC for 3 hours, chemical activation with 3 M NaOH and the combined thermal and chemical to degrade the concentration of Fe in Environmental Engineering Laboratory waste water. The synthetic zeolite were sieved of 40 mesh, 60 mesh and 100 mesh. This study focused on the CEC value of the synthetic zeolite and Fe ion removal efficiency in Environmental Engineering Laboratory waste water. The study was conducted by the method of batch and continuous. Batch method aims to determine the value of CEC and continuous method aims to determine the decreasing in concentration of Fe. From batch experiments was the CEC value obtained between 0.931 mg/g to 1.2429 mg/g. The decreasing in concentration of Fe using synthetic zeolite based on activation and the size of the synthetic zeolite is 80.55% up to 90.25%. The optimum process is 100 mesh synthetic zeolites with thermal and chemical activation.
