STUDY TOWARDS THE CHITIN DEACETYLATION FROM WASTE OF CRABS ( Portunus pelagicus , L )

An investigation to convert chitin into its deacetylated product, chitosan, has been conducted in this research. Prior those deacetylation work, the chitin was isolated from waste of crab (Portunus pelagicus, L) undergoes 3 (three) main steps : deproteination, demineralisation, and decolourisation. It was found that the optimum condition of deacetylation process which gave 86 % yields were at the ratio of chitin- NaOH solvent 1 : 20, 2 molar of NaOH concentration, and temperature of 80 ºC respectively. These resulted chitosan was also verified with an FTIR spectroscopy that gave the identical spectrum with the chitosan FTIR standard spectrum.
