DETECTION OF DROUGHT TOLERANCE OF HYBRID RICE USING POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL (PEG) 6000)

ABSTRACT Polyethilene glycol (PEG) 6000 is expected can be used for early detection of hybrid rice genotypes tolerant to drought so as to accelerate the cycle selection in improvement or assembly varieties program. The objective of the experiment this to determine the concentration of PEG 6000 that provides drought stress and can early detected drought tolerant hybrid genotypes. The design of the experiment consisted of: (i) completely randomized design with treatment of concentrations of PEG 6000, (ii) a split plot design, three replication. The main plot was PEG 6000 consisted of control and concentration 25% of PEG 6000. The sub plot was genotypes/varieties consisted of BI485A/BP3, BI485A/BP5, BI485A/BP10, BI485A/BP12, BI485A/BP15, BI599A/BP5, BI599A/BP15, BI665A/BP6, Maro, Hipa 8, IR64 (drought sensitivity) dan Limboto (drought tolerant). The results showed that concentration 25% of PEG 6000 is sufficient effectively provide drought stress in rice. The use of PEG 6000 concentration of 25% at the seedling stage could detect hybrid rice genotypes tolerant to drought. Key words: drought tolerance, hybrid rice, poly ethylene glycol, selection
