Functional constipation is strongly associated to gender, age, and educational level. In spite of psychological factors, the poor dietary habit is mostly common as its cause. This study aims to see the prevalence of constipation and its related factors among female workers aged 18-55 y in Jakarta. A cross-sectional study was done to 210 female workers in two selected government offices in Jakarta. Interviews and physical assessments were done for collecting data on defecation habits and anthropometric measures. The median age of the subjects was 36 y, with median of waist-circumference was 81.40 cm (central obesity) and body mass index of 24 kg/m2 (overweight). This study found that constipation symptoms ranged as low as 47.6% (straining during defecation) to as high 63.8% (recurrent abdominal discomfort 3d/w). The prevalence of functional bowel disorders was 52.9% and it was significantly prevalent among those aged less than 30 years. This high prevalence of functional bowel disorders among female workers should be seriously addressed to prevent its health impacts. Promoting healthy lifestyle especially among those female workers aged less than 30 y is urgently needed.Key words: constipation, nutrition, women
