One effort of food fulfillment requirement is through the development of upland rice. Buyung is upland rice landrace that widely being planted in South Kalimantan. The objective of this research was to observe some of the characters of Buyung (Oryza sativa L) in support the proposed for Buyung releasing to national variety. The research was carried out in the Hantakan, Batang Alai Selatan, and Haruyan, District, Hulu Sungai Tengah regency, South Kalimantan in November 2008 - April 2009 and November 2009 - April 2010. Kruskal-Wallis test performed on plant height, plant age, number of panicles, panicle length, seeds number per panicle, percentage of pithy seeds per panicle, empty seeds per panicle, yield based on sampling unit, and yield per ha . The atatistical analysis was not done for the rice qualities (the percentage of broken rice skin, head rice percentage, seed shape, ratio length / width of seed, amylose content, rice texture, aroma, and rice color), because the tests carried out without replication. Quality tests conducted at the Laboratory Testing of Balai Besar Penelitian Tanaman Padi, Sukamandi, West Java. Sri Kedaton and Taji were used as control. The advantages of Buyung compared with the control varieties were the number of seeds per panicle, the percentage of pithy seeds, the percentage of empty seeds, the yield per sampling unit, the yield per ha, aroma, and the percentage of head rice. Panicle number and plant age of Buyung, Sri Kedaton and Taji were not significantly different . Buyung was higher than in Sri Kedaton, while not significantly different with Taji . Panicle length ofbuyung was shorter than Sri Kedaton, but not significantly different from Taji. Average yield of varieties Buyung, Sri Kedaton, and Taji, respectively 4:03, 3:36, and 3:28 t ha-1.
